Baking Equipment

While for some, lockdown has been a challenging time, for many it has been a great opportunity to learn a new skill, take up a new hobby or reignite a passion for an old one. As the weeks went by, many people turned to baking to pass the time and escape boredom.

If you are a beginner baker who is looking to pursue your newfound passion for baking, it can be tricky and confusing to know what pieces of equipment you need. There are far too many products on the market and the prices vary considerably. That’s why we put together a list of must-have baking tools to help you set up your baking arsenal and set yourself up for sweet success.

1. Mixing bowls:

Whether it’s for mixing ingredients, making icing or whipping cream, a mixing bowl is an essential tool to have in any kitchen. Most recipes require at least two, so you will need more than one. Choose from plastic, glass or stainless steel but before buying, think whether you want to put a bowl in the microwave, oven, dishwasher and freezer.

2. Weighing scale:

Unlike cooking where you can be creative and improvise, baking requires extreme precision. A good scale is necessarily for measuring out ingredients accurately. We would recommend digital scales as they are more precise.

3. Measuring jug, cups and spoons:

Precision, precision, precision! The more tools you have to help you measure precisely, the more successful your baking goods will be. People always over or underestimate the amounts when using normal cups and spoons, measuring tools are a must to ensure a precise measurement of ingredients.

4. Fine mesh sieve or flour sifter

One of the most useful baking accessories, it is a multi-purpose tool that can be used not only for removing lumps from flour or icing sugar but also for straining wet ingredients and removing seeds especially when making coulis, jams and sauces.

5. Rolling pin:

Rolling pin is an essential tool for rolling out, shaping and smoothing pastry, dough and fondant icing. Wooden pins are beloved by many bakers as they hold onto flour which prevents sticking. Choose a pin that is lightweight and wide enough to cover the size of what you are rolling out.

6. Whisk:

Every baker needs a whisk, this versatile kitchen utensil is useful for efficiently blending ingredients together and most importantly for incorporating air into a mixture for a light, soft and fluffy result. Wire balloon whisks are the most commonly used for baking but you can find other materials such as silicone or bamboo whisks.

7. Electric mixer:

You don’t need to splash out on a fancy stand mixer but you need at least a handheld mixer to achieve a perfect bake. It makes mixing up egg whites, batter and dough quicker and easier. Hand mixers are affordable and are easy to clean and control. They make the perfect choice for people who lack storage space in their kitchens. Choose a mixer with a sturdy base to stop it from toppling over.

8. Spatula

Every bit counts”! A spatula will help you scrape every last bit of batter, dough, icing, or melted chocolate from your bowl. It is also useful for folding dry into wet ingredients. Silicone spatulas can withstand high temperatures which makes them very handy when working with hot ingredients.

9. Baking tins:

When it comes to baking tins, one size doesn’t fit all. It is important to choose the right shape and size that suit the type of cake you want to bake. Aluminium is best as it distributes heat evenly and it allows the batter to rise even and flat. Remember to choose a tin that’s large enough to give the batter room to grow. The chance is you will need a few different ones, so think about strength and durability.

10. Wire rack:

A wire rack prevents condensation and steam and allows air to circulate around your baked goods keeping them fresh and preventing them from turning soggy. That’s what makes it an essential tool that every baker needs.
